The Importance of Breastfeeding

apexchiropracticnc

Breastfeeding is recommended by the AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) for one year and by the WHO (World Health Organization) for two or more years! Although it is highly recommended, a lot of women quit because they struggle breastfeeding successfully! If YOU have struggled with breastfeeding, don’t feel bad because you are not alone! There are so many resources that help women learn how to breastfeed such as lactation consultants or local support groups. Breastfeeding is a learned skill, not something that is easy for the first time. Chiropractic care is another unique source that can benefit both mother and baby!

When it comes to breastfeeding challenges - some women have slow milk letdown, pain/cracking, or inadequate supply. While infants may have an issue latching onto the breast due to tension/ties, decrease range of motion, jaw malfunction, etc. To improve breastfeeding outcomes, we recommend that both mamma and baby be checked for spinal misalignments. When we remove nervous system interference, our bodies function better! For milk production, we recommend drinking a lot of water and eating a diet that consists of carbs, protein, and fats from vegetables, lean meats, nuts, legumes, fruits, etc.

Breast/nipple pain can often be an issue of poor latching. When babies have misalignments in the neck (most importantly the atlas or C1) it causes the baby to favor turning one way versus the other. Babies can also fatigue quickly with breastfeeding that could be related to surrounding muscle/fascia tightness or jaw dysfunctions. New mothers should feel hopeful that it is possible for newborn babies to overcome breastfeeding issues with chiropractic adjustments.

Chiropractic care for babies is extremely gentle! Our doctors use about as much pressure as you would use to check the ripeness of a tomato. Chiropractic has the ability to positively affect new mothers and their newborn babies to ensure a healthy, comfortable postpartum experience.

Breastfeeding benefits for your baby:

  1. Breast milk provides ideal nutrients for babies! It contains everything a baby needs for the first 6 months of life, even down to the right portion size. Your breast milk will change depending on what the baby needs! For example during the first few days of birth, your breast will produce a thick, yellow fluid called colostrum that is high in protein and low in sugar. This will help the newborn’s immature digestive tract develop!

  1. Breast milk contains important antibodies! Breast milk is loaded with antibodies that help your baby fight off viruses and bacteria, which is critical in those early years! High amounts of immunoglobulin A (IgA) are produced early which forms a protective layer in the baby’s nose, throat and digestive system that helps their immunity!

  1. Breastfeeding may reduce disease risk! It can reduce your baby’s risk for many illnesses and diseases, including: middle ear infections, respiratory tract infections, colds, gut issues, intestinal damage, SIDS, allergic diseases, bowel diseases, Diabetes, or childhood leukemia!

  1. Breast milk promotes a baby's healthy weight! Breast fed babies get an increased amount of Leptin which is a key hormone that regulates appetite and fat storage. They also have higher amounts of beneficial gut bacteria which can affect fat storage.

  1. Breastfeeding may make children think better! Some studies suggest there may be a difference in brain development between breastfed and formula-fed babies. This difference can be due to the physical intimacy, touch, and eye contact associated with breastfeeding as well and the nutrient content.

Not all breastfeeding benefits are for the baby! There are also benefits for mom as well:

  1. Breastfeeding may help you lose weight!

  1. Breastfeeding helps the uterus contract! You release a hormone during pregnancy called oxytocin which helps deliver the baby and reduces bleeding. It helps you bond with your new baby as well! Oxytocin is also released during breastfeeding to help the uterus return to normal size and decrease the amount of bleeding.

  1. Mothers typically have a lower risk of depression! A 2012 study shows they are less likely to develop postpartum depression.

  1. Breastfeeding reduces your disease risk! Women who breastfeed typically have a lower risk for: high blood pressure, arthritis, high blood fats, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and even certain cancers.

  1. It may prevent menstruation! Breastfeeding typically pauses ovulation and menstruation! The suspension of menstrual cycles can allow you to enjoy time with your newborn between pregnancies!
